NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team swept all four consolation brackets at the Connecticut State Championships over the weekend, as the Bobcats concluded their fall schedule at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. Seniors Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.), Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.), Devon Jerome (Stamford, Conn.), Fahoum Fahoum (Haifa, Israel) and sophomore Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) each came out on top at the end of the tournament.
Entering the second day of competition, three Bobcats remained in the main singles draw. After advancing through the first two rounds on Friday, sophomore Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) moved on with a victory in his first match on Saturday. Barbero defeated Yale's Zach Dean, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately his run came to a close with a loss to Yale's Jason Brown, 6-2. 6-1, who ended up winning the main draw bracket.
Fahoum and Ambrosio also advanced to the round of 16 with wins on Friday and competed again on Saturday morning. Fahoum fell to Yale's Daniel Hoffman, 6-2, 6-1, and Ambrosio was defeated by Fairfield's Ofir Soloman, 6-3, 6-1, to conclude their run at the CT Championships.
Quinnipiac wasn't through yet though, as the Bobcats made their mark in consolation competition. Jerome collected four wins en route to a title in the Flight "A" bracket, while Lane defeated three opponents to claim the crown in the Flight "B" bracket. Seniors Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Alex Lazerowich along with freshman Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) each also picked up wins in consolations.
Joining Jerome and Lane with consolation titles were two Bobcat pairings, Ambrosio and Lazerowich and Fahoum and Roser, who worked their way through a vigorous doubles bracket. Ambrosio and Lazerowich won three matches to come out on top, while Fahoum and Roser needed two wins for the triumph.
The Bobcats will enjoy a long break through the holiday season before their next match. QU returns to the court on Saturday, January 26, 2013 with a non-conference showdown at Yale.
