HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University men's tennis head coach Mike Quitko has announced that seniors Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.), Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) will serve as the team captains for the 2013 campaign. All three members were part of Quinnipiac's last trip to NCAA's back in 2010 and will look for a second appearance this spring.
"Alex, Chris and Garrett have proven to their teammates that they are our leaders both on and off the court," said Quitko. "They are committed, determined and competitive athletes who lead by example day in and day out. I also feel that their three years of experience will benefit our younger players as we prepare for Northeast Conference competition."
Lazerowich, a 2011 No. 2 Doubles First Team honoree, added 20 wins to his resume this past fall and became the 10th player in Quinnipiac Division I history to earn 70 or more wins. Lazerowich has 73 career victories – including 42 in doubles – which is good enough for seventh during the Division I era. He put together his best campaign in 2010-11 where he finished with 27 wins and a career-best 19 in doubles. Lazerowich was 20-8 through five tournaments and a dual match (St. Francis Brooklyn) in September and October (2012), which featured a 13-4 mark in singles competition.
Nelson collected his 50th career win this past fall when he defeated Hartford's Josh Isaacson at the Connecticut State Championships. He became the 17th player in Quinnipiac Division I history to crack 50 career wins – sitting just one shy of Scott Salway '08 (51) for 16th place on the list. Nelson boasted his best season in 2011-12 when he compiled 18 total wins, 14 in doubles competition. Nelson picked up six wins this past fall, three in singles and three in doubles.
Lane, a two-time All-NEC Second Team honoree, has 65 career wins – sharing 11th place in Quinnipiac Division I history with Goldy Sherrill '07. Lane is four wins shy of fellow captain, Lazerowich, and will look to emulate his rookie season where he posted 30 victories, 15 in singles and 15 in doubles, this spring. This past fall, he amassed 14 wins, eight in singles and six in doubles, which included three wins at the Connecticut State Championships. Lane also garnered a Flight 'D' title at the UConn Invitational.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend with a pair of dual matches in Providence, R.I. Quinnipiac will take on Brown and Binghamton in two non-conference match-ups on Saturday afternoon.
