STORRS, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team fared well in the second day of the 2013 UConn Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats earned spots in three flight finals which will take place tomorrow morning. Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.), Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) and Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) each advanced to the finals of their respective flights in singles, while Ezaka and his partner Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) won Flight C Doubles.
The morning session featured doubles competition with four Bobcat pairings taking the court. Quinnipiac picked up three wins against its opposition, all coming from the tandem of Ezaka and Haraguchi. Ezaka and Haraguchi, who teamed up together for the first time this season, defeated Hartford's Luis Montes and Harrison Max, 8-2, in the quarterfinals; and then followed with a second 8-2 triumph against Boston University's Emilio Teran and Miguel Cepeda in the semifinals. They completed the flight sweep by defeating another BU pairing, knocking off Jay Leelavanich and Jake De Vries, 8-5, in the championship match.
After doubles, the UConn Invitational picked back up with the semifinals of singles play. Quinnipiac had six Bobcats competing and managed to advance three of them to the finals of their respective flights. Ezaka defeated Sacred Heart's Justin Pagan, 6-1, 6-0; Sell put together a furious comeback to defeat Merrimack's Matt Pronesti, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6; and Ambrosio cruised past Bryant's John Templeton, 6-1, 6-2. All three will compete tomorrow morning after the doubles championships. Quinnipiac won four flights in last year's tournament.
Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Haraguchi also took part in the main draw semifinals. Grullon and Barbero were defeated in straight sets, while Haraguchi fell 10-7 in a third-set tie-breaker.
In consolation play, Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) collected a pair of victories and now nears 30 wins for his career. Barbero added another win to his resume as well, creeping closer to the 60-win plateau.
The 2013 UConn Invitational picks up again tomorrow morning with the championship matches. Play commences at 9 a.m.
