HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team opened competition at the 2013 Quinnipiac University Invitational on Friday afternoon, as a field of eight teams took part in the doubles segment at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus.
"It's great to be on our home court this weekend," said head coach Mike Quitko. "Our guys played hard and that's all you can ask for right now. We have a lot of new pairings out there, so they are still learning how to play with one another. We managed to pick up a few wins between the main draw and the back draw."
Junior Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and freshman Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) collected the lone win in the main draw for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac's top-seed in Flight A knocked off a pairing from Sacred Heart, Matt Dean and Brian Power, by a final count of 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, their run came to an end with a two-point loss, 8-6, to UConn's Wayne Harrell and Ryan Carr. Each of Quinnipiac's other three teams were eliminated in the first round of their respective flights.
Two Bobcat pairings rebounded nicely in the consolation bracket though, as Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each won their respective flights. Ambrosio and Sell swept through the Consolation A bracket with three wins against two Pioneer pairings and a team from Hartford. They defeated SHU's Justin Pagan and Luka Bagi in the finals, 8-1, for the title.
Roser and Grullon defeated Alex Holdstein and Harrison Max of Hartford, 8-4, and then Bentley's Samuel Klau and Evan Chomka, 8-1, to advance to the finals of the Consolation B bracket. Roser and Grullon sealed the flight victory with an 8-6 win over UConn's Mark HoSang and James Cohen.
Competition resumes on Saturday, October 5, and then wraps up on Sunday, October 6. Play for the weekend begins at 9 a.m. on both days.
