LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team's sensational start continued on Tuesday afternoon, as the Bobcats completed their second straight sweep to start the 2013-14 season. In its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match in program history, Quinnipiac defeated Siena College, 7-0, at the Siena Tennis Courts in Loudonville, N.Y.
"Our 2013-14 schedule features a bunch of unfamiliar teams because of the move to the MAAC," said head coach Mike Quitko, who earned career win No. 508 with the victory. "It'll take some getting used to but I think with the group we have moving forward we will be right in the mix of things come April."
Quinnipiac, who improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season, received multiple victories from four different players in the match. The visiting Bobcats captured an early 1-0 lead with two wins at doubles, both points coming from the second and third flights. Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) outlasted Alex Burbine and Eric Sumanaru, 9-7, at No. 2, while Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) cruised past Darren Reisch and Matthew Funiciello by a final count of 8-3.
The Bobcats had a much easier time through the singles segment though, as each player won in straight sets. Ezaka remained unbeaten (10-0) with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1; Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) defeated Peter Collins, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Ambrosio collected his 70th career win with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3; Barbero kept his hot streak alive with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4; Roser defeated Sumanaru, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 for his 27th career win; and Haraguchi garnered his second win at singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
