Barbero, Roser and Haraguchi Propel Men’s Tennis to 6-1 Victory over UConn

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season on Thursday afternoon, as the Bobcats outlasted intrastate foe UConn, 6-1, at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) each picked up multiple wins in the Bobcat triumph.

Quinnipiac posted a 4-0 start four years ago, and could be poised for a similar record this time around. For the third straight match this year, the Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead by virtue of the doubles point. Barbero and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) defeated Chris Toner and Jacob Spreyer, 8-3, at No. 2, and Roser and Haraguchi knocked off Zac McEntee and Joshua Palmer, 8-5, at No. 3 for the early advantage.

The six flights of singles featured a much tougher task for the Bobcats, but one that they were certainly up for. Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) each prevailed in straight sets, while the four other matches needed a third set to determine a winner. Ambrosio defeated Ryan Carr, 6-0, 6-1 for his 72nd career win at No. 3, and Sell outlasted Jacob Spreyer, 7-6 (6), 6-2 at No. 2.

In addition to Ambrosio and Sell, Barbero, Roser and Haraguchi each picked up wins in the singles segment. After winning the first set and dropping the second set, Barbero rallied in the third set to defeat Parker Goldstein, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 4. Roser dropped the first set, 3-6, but battled back to take the second and third sets (6-3, 6-2) for the win at No. 5. Haraguchi split the first two sets with Andrew Ginzberg, but prevailed 10-6 in the 10-point tie-breaker at No. 6.

With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 4-3 in its last seven matches with UConn, and is unbeaten in the last two meetings.
