NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Arguably the most anticipated tournament of the fall season, the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team opened competition in the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon, an annual championship hosted by Yale University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
The USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships, apart from showcasing a great deal of collegiate talent all in one place for six days, is significant because the champions from this event will gain automatic entry into the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to be held from Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. This prestigious tournament features players from every region and level of collegiate tennis around the country.
Two Bobcats competed on Thursday – freshman Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) and junior Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) – both taking part in the singles qualifying draw. Sell earned a victory in his first match of the day, 6-2, 6-3, over Boston College's Kyle Childree, however came up one win shy of qualifying for the main draw. Sell dropped the first set, 1-6, won the second set, 6-3, but fell short 6-2 in the final set. Ambrosio also suffered a three-set loss in his match. He won the first set, 6-3, but then fell in consecutive sets, 7-5, 7-5.
The tournament resumes play tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
