NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) picked up his 13th win of the fall season on Friday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team took part in day two of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Tournament, hosted by Yale University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
In the opening round of Main Draw Singles, Ezaka was matched up with Elliot Fanshell of St. Bonaventure. Ezaka and Fanshell split the first two sets, 7-6 (5) and 6-7 (4), but QU's team-leader in wins prevailed in convincing fashion in the third set. Ezaka advanced to the second round with a 6-0 victory in the third and final frame.
With the win, Ezaka improved to 13-1 at singles and garnered his 21st win of the season. He returns to the court tomorrow morning around 11 a.m. against Harvard's Shaun Chaudhuri, the top seed in the third flight.
Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) served as the lone Bobcat duo to qualify for Main Draw Doubles. Ambrosio and Sell met their match in the opening round as Fairleigh Dickinson's Arvis Berzins and Arnaud Valentin came out on top with an 8-4 victory. Ambrosio and Sell have seven wins when paired together this year.
The USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships, apart from showcasing a great deal of collegiate talent all in one place for six days, is significant because the champions from this event will gain automatic entry into the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to be held from Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. This prestigious tournament features players from every region and level of collegiate tennis around the country.
