NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team hit the courts for day two of the Connecticut State Championships in search of sending three players to the quarterfinal round. The three-day event takes place at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
The Bobcats picked up multiple wins on the day, but unfortunately none of those victories came in the Main Draw. Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) and Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) each advanced to Round of 16 yesterday and looked for another win to place them in the quarters. However, three opponents from Yale proved to be too much for the Bobcats, eliminating Quinnipiac from the tournament. Jason Brown defeated Barbero, 6-0, 6-2; Alex Hagermoser defeated Ezaka, 6-2, 6-4; and Zach Krumholz defeated Ambrosio, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Several other players did fare well in consolations though, starting in the doubles back draw. Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and Ben Teicher (Kendall Park, N.J.) played together to defeat Sacred Heart's Alex Bosa and John Bogdanovic, 8-6; Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) combined for an 8-1 victory over Hartford's Harrison Max and Alex Holdstein; Ezaka and Ambrosio defeated UConn's Parker Goldstein and Josh Palmer, 8-2; and Barbero and Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) defeated another Huskies pairing, Andrew Ginzberg and Zac McEntee, 8-6. However, all four teams fell in the semifinal round of their respective flights.
Three players also picked up wins in the singles back draw, which included two victories from Patrick Sell. Sell defeated Hartford's Juan Molina, 6-1, 6-3, and then topped UConn's Parker Cohen, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals. He will take on another UConn foe in Wayne Harrell tomorrow morning.
Roser and Teicher also collected wins but fell in the quarterfinals. Roser defeated UConn's Parker Goldstein, 6-1, 6-3, but fell to Chris Toner (UConn), 6-5, 6-0; and Teicher defeated Jay Baker (Hartford), 6-0, 6-2 but fell Morgan White (Hartford), 5-6, 6-3, 1-0.
The final day of competition begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
