HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matchup to Marist College on Wednesday afternoon, as the first place Red Foxes handed the Bobcats a 7-0 defeat at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Quinnipiac had a tall task in front of them, as the Bobcats battled a talented squad from Marist while also fighting a windy day from Hamden. Marist improved to 12-4 overall and 6-0 in league play, maintaining a stranglehold on first place. Quinnipiac fell to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in conference action, dropping into a tie for third place with Niagara and Fairfield. The top four teams make the MAAC Tournament Championships.
After surrendering three straight matches and the doubles point, Quinnipiac put together a better effort in the singles segment. Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) went toe-to-toe with Lorenzo Rossi in a three-set thriller at No. 1, and Carlos Fernandez (Mexico City, Mexico) also went the distance in his match as well. Ezaka battled back from a first set loss and forced a third set with a 6-2 victory in the second frame. However, Rossi responded nicely in the deciding set, snagging a 6-4 decision for the win.
Fernandez, who has been battling an illness of late, played a tremendous first set in a 6-3 win. However, Marist's Fredrik Bjerke claimed the second set to force a 10-point tie-break, and defeated Fernandez 10-6 in the fifth flight. Marist took the other four points in straight sets.
Trying to get healthy down the final stretch, Quinnipiac received some help with the addition of Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) on Wednesday. He and Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) are working back into the lineup, and are close to providing a lift in singles. They were limited to doubles against the Red Foxes, dropping an 8-5 decision at No. 3.
