Bobcats Prevail in Non-Conference Tennis Match Against Sacred Heart, 4-3
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team overcame an early deficit to defeat long-standing rival Sacred Heart, 4-3, at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon. The Bobcats snapped a two-match slide with the victory, while improving to 7-5 in their last 12 meetings with the Pioneers.
After dropping the doubles point, Quinnipiac bounced back in top form at singles. The Bobcats picked up wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 6 to secure the victory, and improved to 7-9 overall with the win. Sacred Heart fell to 6-13 with the loss.
All four of Quinnipiac's victories came in straight sets, spearheaded by Kei Ezaka's (Ojai, Calif.) third win in his last four tries. Ezaka collected his 34th win of the season when he defeated Brian Power, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. It was his second straight win after picking up QU's lone point on Saturday against Niagara.
Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) cashed in at No. 2 singles, as the Lloyd Harbor, N.Y. native cruised past Justin Pagan, 6-3, 6-3, for his second win of the afternoon. He has 33 wins this season, and bumped his career total to 89 – leaving him just 11 shy of 100 in a Bobcat uniform.
Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) sealed the win for the Bobcats with wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Roser defeated Kevin Budrawich, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3, and picked up his 43rd career win. Morgenstern returned in impressive fashion, making a spot start when Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) was forced to sit out with an injury. Even though it was his first singles match in several months, he prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the match for Quinnipiac. It was his 34th career win at singles – putting him in a tie for 14th with Goldy Sherrill for most career singles wins in the Division I era.
Ambrosio and Roser each finished with two wins on the day after winning at No. 1 doubles. They defeated Budrawich and Matt Dean to pick up their second win of the season when paired together.
