HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's cross country team was chosen to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference Pre-Season Poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The Bobcats finished eighth at the 2010 NEC Cross Country Championships and were led by junior Mike Levene (Redding, Conn.), who finished 24th.
Central Connecticut State, two-time defending NEC Cross Country Champions, was picked to finish first in the poll with 10 first-place votes, while Saint Francis (Pa.) was tabbed to finish second after receiving two first-place votes. Sacred Heart was chosen to finish third, while Monmouth, who will host the 2011 Championship meet, was picked to finish fourth, with Wagner in the fifth position. Bryant and Mount St. Mary's were the coaches' sixth and seventh selections, respectively. St. Francis (NY) was voted tenth, while Fairleigh Dickinson and Long Island rounded out the poll.
The 2011 Bobcats are led by head coach Carolyn Martin, who enters her third year as the head coach for men's and women's cross country and the women's indoor track and outdoor track teams. Quinnipiac seniors John Beckshaw (Medford, Mass.), David Coppola (Reading, Mass.) and John Healy (Middletown, N.J.) look to lead the Bobcats this fall, alongside juniors Edgar Carrasco (Durham, Conn.), Jacob Cetera (Chicago, Ill.), Rich Stoliker (Shelton, Conn.), Ryan Wolff (Mount Holly, N.J.) and Levine, who was named Quinnipiac's Male Athlete of the Month in September of 2010. Sophomores Dylan DeNuzzo (Melville, N.Y.) and Adam Hawkes return this fall, while freshmen Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.), Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) and Josh Wells join Quinnipiac in their first season.
Quinnipiac kicks off the 2011 season at the Stony Brook Invitational on Sept. 3. The Bobcats will then participate at the Fordham Fiasco on Sept. 10, followed by the Monmouth Invitational on Sept. 17. The team will round out September at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University on Sept. 30.
The Bobcats begin October at the New England Championship on Oct. 8. The team will then host the Quinnipiac Invitational on Oct. 21 in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac looks to prevail at the 2011 NEC Cross Country Championships, which will be hosted by Monmouth University in Holmdel, N.J. on Oct. 29. The 2011 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships will be held on Nov. 12 and Nov. 21, respectively.
