HOLMDEL, N.J. - The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team finished sixth out of 12 teams at the 2011 Northeast Conference Championships on Saturday morning at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J. The Bobcats finished the 8k course with a total of 171 points, while Central Connecticut State won the title with 54 points. Freshman Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) led Quinnipiac as he placed 27th overall in 27:50.90.
“We really improved from last year and were very close to hitting our goal for the season,” said head coach Carolyn Martin. “I saw a lot of great racing today and the men really stepped up to where they needed to be. We packed up as a group nicely and that’s what helped us improve in our scoring today. The team ran as a group much better than they have earlier in the year.”
Following Mannion was junior Mike Levene (Redding, Conn.), who placed 29th in 27:54.50. Freshman Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.) was the third Quinnipiac runner to finish, placing 37th with a time of 28:10.60. Junior Richard Stoliker (Shelton, Conn.) placed 40th in 28:17, immediately followed by senior John Healy (Middletown, N.J.) in 42nd place in 28:20.30.
Juniors Jacob Cetera (Chicago, Ill.) and Edgar Carrasco (Durham, Conn.) rounded out the top-seven Bobcats to finish the 8k course, placing in 65th and 71st, respectively. Cetera finished with a time of 29:07.30, while Carrasco crossed the finish line at 29:35.70.
“I think the men really ran great and came together as a team today,” said assistant coach Bart Wasiolek. “I’m really proud of them as they battled the entire way. Although a few injuries set us back, it was really the first race this season that the men ran together as a team.”
