STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Paced by the return of senior Rich Klauber (Thomaston, Conn.) and the sensational debut of freshman Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.), the Quinnipiac men's cross country team placed second at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday. Overall, the Bobcats finished with 49 points and an average finishing time of 20:04.83, coming 18 points behind the host Seawolves and ahead of Southern Connecticut, Manhattan College, and Sacred Heart. Their highest team-finish in a race since the same Invitational in 2011, the Bobcats opened the 2012 season with a host of individual successes.

"I felt the guys did a really great job today," Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin said. "They acted as a team as we are all so excited about this team this year. We got the returners and freshmen to all contribute today. The guys not only did really well individually but they acted as a team and did well together. We are excited to build off this performance next weekend and hope to have a strong 2012 season."

After transferring to La Salle University in 2010, Klauber, the 2008 Northeast Conference Outstanding Performer and Freshman of the Year, picked up right where he left off for Quinnipiac with a second place overall finish and a time of 19:17.38 in the 6k event. With the addition of Klauber, the Bobcats hope to reclaim the same success they had in 2008 and 2009 with an NEC Championship and NEC runner-up respectively.

The Bobcats were also led by the rookie Copley who finished in fifth place overall with a time of 19:49.87. The 2010-11 Gatorade Vermont Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year began his collegiate career with a dominant performance.

Two more Bobcat freshman in Daniel Fox (Johnsburg, Ill.) and Matt Mensher (Tolland, Conn.) finished 11th and 13th with 20:17.6 and 20:20.74 respectively. Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.) crossed the finish line in 19th place with 20:38.52 and Jacob Cetera (Chicago, Ill.) rounded out the top-five for Quinnipiac on Saturday in 21:00.82.

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday Sep. 8 with a trip to the host site of the 2012 NEC Championship at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
