HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's cross country senior Rich Klauber (Thomaston, Conn.) and freshman Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.) swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards as Klauber claimed the Co-Athlete of the Week and Copley was named the Rookie of the Week. Wednesday's announcement from the league office marked the first time Quinnipiac men's cross country has swept the Athlete and Rookie of the week honors since Klauber was recognized with both on Sep. 23, 2008.
"We could not be more excited with the start to this season and hope this is only the beginning," Quinnipiac cross country head coach Carolyn Martin said. "We are thrilled to have Rich rejoining us here at Quinnipiac. His leadership will play an integral role for the program this year. Brendan is a great talent and excellent student-athlete and we are very fortunate to have been able to add such an impressive performer to this team."
Klauber earns his third NEC Athlete of the Week recognition after finishing second at the Stony Brook Invitation on Saturday Sep. 1. In his first race back with Quinnipiac after transferring to La Salle in 2010, he finished the 6k event in 19:17.38 and just seven seconds behind Stony Brook's Dan Denis who claimed first place on Saturday. The 2008 NEC Outstanding Performer and Rookie of the Year picked up right where he left off and helped guide the Bobcats to a second place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational.
Copley joins an impressive list of Quinnipiac NEC Rookie of the Week designees from past years on Wednesday. Previous winners from Quinnipiac include three-time winners sophomore Spencer Mannion during the 2011 season and Klauber in the 2008 campaign. Senior Mike Levene also won two Rookie of the Week awards during the 2009 season for the Bobcats. After finishing fifth overall in his first collegiate race at the Stony Brook Invitational, Copley now can include his name with three current standout runners on the 2012 squad. The 2010-11 Gatorade Vermont Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year finished the race in 19:49.87 and competed behind Klauber as the second fastest Bobcat.
Quinnipiac will next race in Smithfield, R.I., site of the 2012 NEC Championship, on Saturday Sep. 8 at the Bryant Invitational. The 8k men's event begins at 10:00 a.m. while the women's 5k event starts at 10:45 a.m.
