Freshman Brendan Copley Leads Men's Cross Country to 4th (of 12) at Nassaney Race
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Reigning NEC Rookie of the Week and freshman standout Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.) teamed up with reigning NEC Co-Athlete of the Week senior Rich Klauber (Thomaston, Conn.) to lead the Bobcats to a fourth place showing at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race hosted by Bryant University. Copley and Klauber finished the 8k event in 10th and 11th overall and helped lead Quinnipiac to 133 points and a fourth place team finish on Saturday.
"I'm really happy with all the men who competed today," Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin said afterwards. "They all worked so hard and gave great energy all week leading up to today's race. Our coaching staff put them through a tough week in practice and I'm ecstatic with the way they raced as a team and the amount of energy they all had today."
The Bobcats compiled an average finish of 26:54.7 at the host site of the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship. Their 133 points landed behind Boston University (53), Northeastern (68), and Monmouth (102) and ahead of seven other NEC teams competing at Saturday's event.
Copley backed up his fifth place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational with a time of 26:09.7 and a top-10 overall finish among 125 competitors. Klauber, coming off a second place overall finish at Stony Brook, posted 26:20.1 and another strong finish for the Bobcats. The combination has now gone consecutive weeks finishing as the top finishers for Quinnipiac.
Sophomore Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.) ran a personal-best 27:05.5 in the 8k event and finished in 30th overall. The freshman duo of Matt Mensher (Tolland, Conn.) and Daniel Fox (Johnsburg, Ill.) rounded out the top-five the Bobcats with 36th and 46th place overall results respectively. Mensher finished in 27:16.7 and Fox crossed the finish line in 27:41.5.
The race was held in memory of Shawn Nassaney, a former member of the Bryant cross country and track teams that passed away during the attacks on September 11, 2001, and is coordinated by the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Foundation.
The Bobcats will next host the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday Sep. 15 with the men's event starting at 10:45 a.m. and the women taking place before the men at 10 a.m.
