HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Mike Levene (Redding, Conn.) came away with a dramatic 3rd place finish as he passed several runners in the final 100 yards to lead the Bobcats to a 2nd place finish at the Quinnipiac Invitational. Several Bobcats runners were honored beforehand as it was the final home meet for three men's cross country seniors. NEC rival Central Conn. St. finished with 24 points to take the win while the Bobcats compiled 31 points to take second in the 8k event.
"The men's team looked great today," Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin said. "We sat out a couple of our top guys but overall the guys who did race had a great race. Mike Levene was our top runner on the men's side and he really surprised me today with a smart race and strong finish. We are really looking to put everyone together and see what's going to happen in future races."
As Levene crossed the last corner heading into the final homestretch he could see four runners in front of him sitting in 5th place. With the finish line in sight, Levene shot ahead of three runners and was even with the runner in second place with almost 40 feet to go. The photo finish had the runner just ahead of Levene as he finished in 3rd overall with a time of 27:48.5, just behind the 2nd place finisher's time of 27:48.1. Levene was running in his first event of the 2012 season and the 3rd place finish is the best of his career.
Sophomore Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) finished five seconds behind Levene in 5th place as he crossed the line at 27:53.2. Freshman Daniel Fox (Johnsburg, Ill.) had his first career top-10 finish with 28:48.8 and senior Jacob Cetera (Chicago, Ill.) placed right behind Fox in 11th place as his time of 28:51.5 was less than three seconds behind his teammate. Senior Edgar Carrasco (Durham, Conn.), running in his last career home meet, had 29:25.7 and a 14th place finish.
The Bobcats will return to action after taking a week off at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on Saturday Sep. 28 with the men starting at 12:00 p.m.
