SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team nearly came away with their first Northeast Conference Championship since 2008 on Saturday, finishing 3rd in the pressure-packed event. Senior Rich Klauber (Thomaston, Conn.) and freshman Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.) gave Quinnipiac their first All-Conference honorees since the 2009 season when Klauber was joined by two other Bobcats in an event where they finished the runners-up. The Bobcats (79 points) nearly came away with the title as they finished a mere seven points behind first-place Central Connecticut State (72 points) who claims their fourth consecutive NEC Championship.

"The guys all moved up after we got off to a bad start," said Quinnipiac men's cross country head coach Carolyn Martin. "They all responded well and our coaching staff was all impressed with their resiliency and desire throughout the competition. We did not expect the race to be this close and it certainly made for an exciting race up to the very end."

Selected to finish seventh in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the men's cross country squad ran an inspired raced that nearly had them atop the leaderboard. Klauber is the highest-placing Bobcat since 2009 where he finished 2nd overall as the senior placed 5th in the 2012 NEC Championship. He ran the event in 25:20.96 and was the main catalyst setting the pace for Quinnipiac on the afternoon.

The dominant pairing of Klauber and Copley, who've finished as the top two Bobcat runners in all four events in which they have raced together, was once again a major factor as the freshman placed 8th in the 8k event. Copley crossed the line at 25:31.84, his second-best time of the season, and nearly came away with the Rookie of the Year crown. Fairleigh Dickinson's freshman Darrel Gooding finished in 7th-place, just eight seconds ahead of Copley, to take the Rookie of the Year.

Sophomore Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) nearly missed an All-Conference honor as he came one spot away from the top-14, finishing in 15th-place. Mannion's time of 26:03.58 is nearly two minutes faster than his 2011 NEC Championship time of 27:50.9 where he finished first on the team.

Another sophomore Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.) placed right behind Mannion in 21st position. Dextradeur came within one second of beating his season-best time of 26:11.8 as he crossed the line in 26:12.27 on Saturday. He also improved 16 spots from his 2011 NEC Championship finish.

The contingent of junior Rich Stoliker (Shelton, Conn.), freshman Matt Mensher (Tolland, Conn.) and senior Mike Levene (Redding, Conn.) rounded out the top-seven for Quinnipiac on Saturday. Stoliker improved 10 spots from his 40th-place finish in the 2011 NEC Championships, placing 30th with a time of 26:32.28, the best of his career in a 8k race. Mensher recorded a time of 26:45.42 and completed the event in 35th position. Levene, running in his final NEC Championship, placed 54th with a time of 27:21.10 on Saturday.

The Bobcats will have a week off before heading to Hammonasset State Park on Friday, Nov. 9th for the NCAA Northeast Regional with the men's event starting at 1:15 p.m.
