HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac freshman Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was named the Akadema/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, for the second consecutive week, on Monday, April 27. Schwartzburg secured the conference's top rookie honor on Apr. 20 as well.
The honor is Schwartzburg's fourth of the season from the NEC after she was named the Akadema/NEC Pitcher of the Week on April 6 and again on April 13. No other player has been honored as many times as Schwartzburg this season.
The 5-foot-10-inch freshman earned her latest honor after pitching the Bobcats to a pair of wins this past week. On Saturday, Apr. 25, Schwartzburg hurled a complete game one-hitter for her fifth shutout of the season in a 4-0 win against Mount St. Mary's in the second game of a doubleheader. The first-year hurler also struck out seven in four innings of work in the first game of the twinbill. Schwartzburg bounced back to pitch both ends of a doubleheader against Monmouth on Sunday, Apr. 26. She struck out 16 over two games as Quinnipiac split the two-game series with the Hawks, a 5-4 loss in the first game and an 8-2 win in the second game.
For the week, Schwartzburg posted a 1.68 earned-run average over 25 innings of work, while striking out 28. For the year, she leads the NEC in ERA (1.52) and strikeouts (182). Schwartzburg's strikeout total are a Bobcats' Division I record and the most since Krista Seeman struck out 122 in 2007.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Thurday, Apr. 30 when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on the Saints of Siena College in a non-conference match-up set for a 3 p.m. start. Quinnipiac will then host Robert Morris on Saturday, May 2 in an NEC doubleheader with a conference tournament spot on the line. Should Quinnipiac win both games against the Colonials, they would secure the No. 4 in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 8-10.
