Softball Announces 2010 Captains

HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University softball head coach Germaine Fairchild has announced the captains for the upcoming 2010 season. Seniors Katie Allendorfer (Glenside, Pa.), Christine Bourdeau (Seymour, Conn.) and Kelly Wall (Westport, Conn.) will return as captains for the second consecutive season, along with senior Emily Bellush (Newton, Mass.) who is serving her first year as a captain.

Bourdeau was a constant for the Bobcats last season, starting all 48 games at shortstop and as the leadoff hitter in 2009. She led the team in several batting categories including batting average (.355), hits (55), runs (27), doubles (10) and slugging percentage (.439). Bourdeau drove in 14 RBI in her junior season, and led the team in stolen bases with 20 in 24 attempts. The shortstop was also a great defensive contributor, tying for the team lead in assists (100) with a .926 fielding percentage.

"Christine has been a performance leader on our team since her freshman year," said Fairchild. "She has developed her vocal and off-field leadership skills over the past two seasons, and is looked up to by all of our student-athletes."

Wall was also a sturdy performer for Quinnipiac in her junior season, starting all 48 games at third base. The senior ranked just behind Bourdeau in hits (41), doubles (6), and runs (23). Wall hit three homeruns on the year, tallying an RBI total of 22. She was perfect in stolen bases, completing six steals in six attempts. A solid third baseman, Wall tied with Bourdeau in assists (100) and compiled a .919 fielding percentage.

"Kelly provides our players with a great example of how to go about being a highly successful student-athlete," said Fairchild. "She is a disciplined student, committed to physical fitness and nutrition, and strives to maintain balance in her life."

Allendorfer generated the most runs for the Bobcats last season, driving in a team-high of 33 RBI. She also led the team in homeruns (7) and walks (15) on the year. A force behind the plate as well, Allendorfer started 47 games catching for Quinnipiac, recording 295 put-outs and a .994 fielding percentage. The senior also contributed 29 hits and five doubles while batting .227 in the regular season.

"Katie's durability, strength and toughness behind the plate is admired by everyone in our program," said Fairchild. "Her teammates draw inspiration from her performance, and guidance from her carefully chosen words."

Bellush served double duty as a first baseman and a pitcher for the Bobcats last year. She saw action in 39 games for the Bobcats, pitching in 17 of them. The senior ranked second on the team in batting average (.282), RBI (23) and homeruns (4), while contributing 29 hits and nine runs on the year. She earned a .980 fielding percentage at first base with 112 put-outs, and also compiled a 4.32 ERA pitching five complete games from the circle. Bellush pitched 82.2 innings last season, and struck out 61 batters.

"In addition to being a captain of the softball team, Emily is a leader in the Quinnipiac Community," said Fairchild. "She is the Co-Chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, giving her opportunities to sit on the Athletics Council and the campus-wide Student Leader Advisory Council. Emily's strong voice and desire to take an active role on behalf of her fellow students sets a standard that our younger players aspire to meet."

The softball team will kick off their 2010 spring schedule on Feb. 20 when they travel to Farmville, Va. to play in the Longwood Lead Off Classic.
