Softball Splits First Day Of Competition In Under Armour ShowcaseCLEARWATER, Fla. - Senior Katie Allendorfer (Glenside, Pa.) hit her first homerun of the 2010 season as the Quinnipiac University softball team split in their first day of competition in the Under Armour Showcase hosted by the University of South Florida. The Bobcats recorded a 3-0 win against Pittsburgh in their first game of the day, before falling, 7-0, to Central Michigan in the evening as their record now stands at 5-10 on the year.
It took just one inning for the Bobcats to earn the 3-0 victory against the Panthers. In the top of the sixth, junior Julie Sini (Elgin, Tex.) started the inning on first base as she was hit by a pitch in the first at bat. In the following play, freshman Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) tapped a sacrifice bunt up the first base line, and reached on error by the first baseman, advancing to second base while Sini moved to third. With one out on the board, senior Allendorfer stepped to the plate and smacked a three-run shot into center field, bringing Sini and Salgado around to score and earn the 3-0 lead.
Sophomore RHP Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) blanked Pittsburgh from the circle as she pitched the complete game for the Bobcats. Schwartzburg allowed just one hit through seven innings, striking out 13 batters. It was the first shutout for Schwartzburg this season, and the sixth of her career.
Quinnipiac tallied four hits against Central Michigan, but was unable to cross the plate in the second game of the day. The Chippewas tallied three runs in the first and sixth inning, with junior third baseman Amanda Patrick hitting a three-run homer in the first to pick up the early lead. Five more hits contributed to the three runs in the sixth inning to solidify Central Michigan's final score at 7-0.
Freshman RHP Alejandra Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) got the start for the Bobcats in game two, pitching five innings and earning four runs in the outing. Alba struck out five batters in the game before junior Jaimie Iaquinto (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Schwartzburg came in for relief. Schwartzburg and Iaquinto combined to pitch the remaining two innings and struck out five more in the game.
Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow morning when they play their final game in Florida against Jacksonville State. The final day of the Under Armour Showcase will start at 9 a.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Complex, with the Bobcats starting at 11:15 a.m. against the Gamecocks
