Softball Falls Short To Massachusetts, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. - The Quinnipiac softball team lost to Massachusetts, 1-0, in its final game of the 2011 regular season on Sunday, May 8 at the UMass Softball Complex. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 30-25 on the year, while the Minutewomen improve to 28-17.

Quinnipiac junior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) took the loss as she pitched 7.2 innings for the Bobcats. Schwartzburg struck out 10 batters and allowed four hits in the contest. Bobcats' junior outfielder Christy Cabrera (Reno, Nev.) and sophomore shortstop Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) each contributed a hit against Massachusetts.

The non-conference match-up went into extra innings after seven scoreless innings were played. The Minutewomen took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs on the inning, UMass freshman Tiffany Meeks singled through the right side, driving in junior Kyllie Magill from third base for the win.

Quinnipiac returns to action when it competes as the No. 3 seed in the 2011 Northeast Conference Softball Championships on May 13-14. Robert Morris has secured the top position, while Sacred Heart has clinched the No. 2 seed. Central Connecticut State will play in the fourth slot.
