Hamden, Conn. - Quinnipiac University softball junior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was named the Akadema/Northeast Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, for the fifth time this year, as announced by the league office on Monday, May 9. Schwartzburg shares this season's final weekly award with Central Connecticut State's Elizabeth Montemurro.
Schwartzburg picks up her fifth weekly title of the year after starting in both of Quinnipiac's non-conference games last week. The right-handed hurler came away with a 1-1 record as she pitched a total of 13.2 innings in Quinnipiac's 2-0 win against Fairfield and 1-0 loss to Massachusetts. Overall, Schwartzburg struck out a combined 21 batters and maintained a 0.51 ERA.
In Thursday's victory over Fairfield, Schwartzburg broke the Quinnipiac single-season wins record as she picked up her 22nd win of the year, surpassing the previous record of 21 victories in a season set by Michelle Boisvert in 1995. After breaking the Quinnipiac single-season record for the third time in her career last week, the Mission Viejo native broke the NEC single-season strikeout record as she fanned 11 Fairfield batters to increase her season total to 276 strikeouts. Schwartzburg's current team and league-leading 286 strikeouts trump Robert Morris' Lauren Dickinson's 273 from 2001.
Schwartzburg previously won the NEC Pitcher of the Week title on April 18, April 4, March 21 and March 7 of this year.
