Quinnipiac Softball Falls To Maryland, 4-1, And Defeats Netherlands National Team, 7-6

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Quinnipiac University softball team (8-10) lost to the University of Maryland, 4-1, in the final day of the Under Armour Showcase at the University of South Florida on March 13. The Bobcats also defeated the Netherlands National Team, 7-6, in 10 innings in an exhibition game on Sunday.

Quinnipiac's first game of the day went into extra innings, after seven scoreless innings between the Bobcats and the Terps. In the top of the eighth, Maryland scored three runs off a Kerry Hickey homerun to left center. The Terps took a 4-0 lead as Lexi Carroll hit another homerun.

In the bottom of the eighth, senior first baseman Joelle Jacobsen (Flemington, N.J.) was placed on second and was able to advance to third on a Maryland error. Second baseman Jacqueline Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) doubled to right field, driving in Jacobsen for the Bobcats' only run of the game.

Overall, Quinnipiac junior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) struck out eight batters in eight innings, while Christy Cabrera (Reno, Nev.), Bridget Figmic, and Ristow each contributed a hit for the Bobcats.

With the score tied, 5-5, against the Netherlands National Team, Quinnipiac freshman pitcher Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) came in to pitch in the seventh inning. After the Dutch took a 6-5 lead over the Bobcats in the ninth, Alfiere hit a single to right field, driving in Julia Sini (Elgin, Texas) to tie the score at six runs apiece.

After Quinnipiac held the Dutch in the top of the 10th, the Bobcats' Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) singled down the right-field line, allowing Ristow to score the game-winning run.

Quinnipiac returns to action when it plays Boston University on Wednesday, March 16 at noon in Clearwater, Fla.
