Bobcats Continue Play In The Golden State
The Quinnipiac University softball team (9-4, 0-0 NEC)
plays a pair of games against non-conference opponents, San Diego
State (15-14, 0-0 MW) and San Diego (11-10, 0-0 PCSC), this week.
The Bobcats first take on SDSU on Tuesday, March 13, followed by
San Diego on Wednesday, March 14. Both games begin at 9 p.m.
(EST).

Scouting San Diego State
San Diego State hosts the Bobcats on Tuesday, posting a
15-14 overall record. The Aztecs recently competed at Fresno
State’s Bayer CropScience Classic, where they went 2-3 in
tournament action. San Diego State picked up wins over Butler and
Connecticut, but fell to nationally ranked California and Oregon,
and lost to Purdue at the tourney. Earlier in the year, SDSU was
picked to win the Mountain West regular season title. The Aztecs
are currently led by sophomore Haley Miles’ .389 batting
average, 35 hits, 29 runs, and 12 doubles. Fellow sophomore Patrice
Jackson paces SDSU with 22 RBI and a .810 slugging percentage.
Together, Miles, Jackson and sophomore Lorena Klopp have
contributed 18 homeruns in the 2012 season. Starting junior pitcher
Rebecca Arbino leads the team with a 1.80 ERA and a 7-6 mark from
within the circle, while senior Bailey Micetich is 6-3 on the year
with a 2.26 ERA.
Scouting San Diego
San Diego enters the week at 11-10 on the year. Most
recently, the Toreros went 1-4 at the Nevada Classic. USD split a
pair of games against Wisconsin, but lost three to tourney host
Nevada. Three Toreros currently post batting averages above the
.350 mark, including freshman Caitlin Rooney who is batting a
team-high .365. Rooney and junior Lauren Toomey have contributed 11
RBI, while senior catcher Taylor Hensley’s 16 RBI ranks first
amongst the Toreros. Rookie third baseman Chloe Kaneko leads the
team with 23 hits, while senior Jessica Tieszen and Morgan Kurtz
have scored 25 runs together. Senior Cassidy Coleman and freshman
Jenny Lahitte have represented San Diego from inside the circle,
posting 2.78 and 2.90 ERAs, respectively. Each has made 14
appearances and eight starts this season. Together, Coleman and
Lahitte have struck out 129 batters and pitched over 100
innings.
Last Time Out
The Quinnipiac University softball team competed at its
third tournament of the 2012 season at UC Riverside’s Amy S.
Harrison Classic over the weekend. The Bobcats went 2-2, picking up
wins against Saint Joseph’s, 1-0, and UC Riverside, 3-2. QU
fell to non-conference opponents Loyola Marymount, 3-0, and UC
Riverside, 3-2.
QU Softball Shuts Out
The Bobcats recorded their third shutout of the year in a
1-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s University on March 10 at UC
Riverside’s tournament. Christy Cabrera led the Bobcats
against the Hawks as she pitched a complete game for her first win
of her senior season, while junior Alex Alba’s first homerun
of the year gave QU the win.
Leading Ladies
Quinnipiac senior Mina Duffy currently leads the team with
12 RBI, while fellow classmate Christy Cabrera has contributed a
team-high 17 hits. Junior Alex Alba currently paces the team with a
.444 batting averages, while three Bobcats have scored seven runs
this season.
Keep Up The Good Work
Starting pitcher Heather Schwartzburg went 1-1 at the UC
Riverside tournament, improving her senior record to 5-1.
Schwartzburg currently posts a near-perfect 0.79 ERA after making
eight appearances for the Bobcats. She also collected her
50th strikeout of the season in tournament action and
now has 51 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched.
A Great Start
The Bobcats went undefeated (4-0) in its opening weekend
at the Longwood Spring Classic on Feb. 25-26. QU swept each of its
opponents, including Iona and Saint Peter’s, in a pair of
non-conference games. Quinnipiac defeated Iona, 2-0 and 4-3, and
Saint Peter’s 14-1 in a five-inning contest and 11-3 in six
innings.
Fierce In Florida
Quinnipiac competed at the University of South Florida
Under Armour Invitational last weekend where the Bobcats went 3-2
to improve their overall record to 7-2. QU picked up wins over
Florida Gulf Coast, 1-0, Bowling Green State, 7-4 and Miami (Ohio),
3-2. The Bobcats’ Alex Alba batted .500 as she went 7-for-14
on the weekend. Alba also had a team-best three doubles and
collected 10 total bases. Senior catcher Ashley Heiberger led QU
with four runs, while freshman Jordan Paolucci contributed three
RBI. Paolucci and Heiberger each hit a homerun at the USF
Touranment. Senior Heather Schwartzburg also earned two wins,
pitching two complete games, one lasting 10 innings.
What’s Ahead For The Bobcats
Quinnipiac returns to action when it participates at the
San Diego State University Classic II on March 16-18. The Bobcats
will first play CSU Bakersfield on Friday, March 16 at 2:30 p.m.,
followed by a pair of games on Saturday, March 17 against Nevada
and tourney host San Diego State. On Sunday, March 18 QU will take
on Purdue at Noon in the last day of tournament play. All games
will be played at the SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego,
Calif.
