CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac University softball team, now 7-1 on the year, split a pair of non-conference games in the second day of the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational on Saturday, March 3. QU defeated Miami (Ohio), 3-2, in extra innings, but fell to Bethune-Cookman, 11-2, in a five-inning contest.

In its first match-up of the day, Quinnipiac defeated Miami (Ohio), 3-2, in 10 innings. Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the Bobcats as she pitched all 10 innings, striking out 11 batters and only allowing one earned run in the contest.

In front 1-0, the Bobcats scored their next run in the the seventh inning. Senior Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) led off the seventh with a single to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error. She was brought in on a Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) single. Miami evened the score, 2-2, and forced the game into extra innings after scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the tenth, the Bobcats had two outs and Kesses on third base. Senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) singled to the shortstop to drive in Kesses for the game-winning run that Miami was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning.

On Saturday evening, Quinnipiac picked up its first loss of the season to Bethune-Cookman, 11-2, across five innings of play. After the Wildcats scored three runs in the first and second innings, they were able to put together five runs in the bottom of the third. Neither club would score in the fourth inning, despite runners on base.

QU's Cabrera led off the top of the fifth with a single to the shortstop. Junior Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) followed and reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Senior Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) then singled down the left-field line, driving in Salgado for the Bobcats' first run of the game. After Duffy grounded out, junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) hit a single down the right-field line to bring in Heiberger to narrow the gap, 11-2, but QU was unable to add any points to the scoreboard for the remainder of the inning.

The Bobcats saw three pitchers in the outing, but sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) dropped to 2-1 on the year as she was given the loss. Alfiere started the game and saw 20 Bethune-Cookman batters as she pitched 2.1 innings.
