CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac University softball team dropped a non-conference game to Western Michigan, 3-1, in the last day of the USF Under Armour Invitational on Sunday, March 4. The Bobcats are now 7-2 on the year after posting a 3-2 mark at South Florida's tournament.
QU took an early 1-0 lead after Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) homered to left center with two outs in the top of the first inning. Western Michigan responded with two runs in the bottom of the third as Meredith Whitney homered to center field with Christina Pigozzi on second base.
The Broncos widened its advantage, 3-1, in the bottom of the sixth as Diana Patterson doubled to left field, driving in Whitney from first base. The Bobcats were unable to add to the scoreboard for the remainder of the outing.
Western Michigan's Whitney earned the win after pitching a complete game, while Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) received the loss after pitching 5.1 innings for the Bobcats. Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) entered the match-up in the sixth inning and faced two batters.
Quinnipiac junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) led QU with two hits, one of five Bobcats to make contact at the plate.
The Bobcats return to action when they compete at the UC Riverside Tournament on March 9-11. Quinnipiac faces Loyola Marymount in the first day of tournament play on Friday at 5 p.m.
