SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Quinnipiac University softball team split a pair of non-conference games in the first day of the San Diego Classic II on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats opened tournament action with a 3-1 win over California State Bakersfield, but lost to San Diego, 9-0, in five innings of play. Quinnipiac, now 11-6 on the year, will play UNLV and San Diego State on Saturday, March 17 in the second day of the tourney.
In the first outing of the day, both clubs had seven hits. QU's leading batter junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) went 2-for-3, while freshman Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) also contributed two hits against the Roadrunners. Junior Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) scored two runs and senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) posted two RBI. Bobcats' senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) improved to 7-1 with the non-conference victory, pitching a complete game and striking out nine of the 30 batters she saw. CSU Bakersfield's Sarah Hoag took the loss, although Marissa Hiller and Taylor Desilva each made an appearance within the circle.
Quinnipiac grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, senior Cabrera was walked, bringing in Kesses for the run. The roadrunners answered in the third inning as Sara Smith drove in Adrianna Cordoza from third base with a double to right center.
With two outs on the next inning, the Bobcats' went ahead, 2-1, when Barba scored from second as Cabrera doubled to left field. After a scoreless fifth inning, QU increased its advantage, 3-1, in the top of the sixth. Kesses was driven in from third base as junior Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) grounded out to second base, for the team's second out of the inning.
After Quinnipiac was unable to add to the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, Cal State Bakersfield had the opportunity to send the game into extra innings. However, Schwartzburg helped keep the Bobcats alive as she struck out two of the five batters she faced in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In its second contest, San Diego grabbed a 9-0 shutout in only five innings. The Toreros also out-hit the Bobcats, 15-2. Quinnipiac's Cabrera and Kesses each contributed a hit in the outing, while four Toreros hit doubles and three USD players had triples in the contest. San Diego's Jessica Tieszen went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
QU's Cabrera and sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) each pitched against San Diego, but Cabrera received the loss after seeing three innings, placing her at 1-3 on the year. San Diego's Jenny Lahitte earned her sixth win of the season as she struck out eight of the 15 batters she saw.
The Toreros scored two runs on three hits in the top of the first, while the team had four hits and scored three runs in the next inning. Tieszen led off the third with a double to left field. With one out on the inning, Katie Emerson singled, driving in Tieszen. Chelsea Kamai then tripled to right center for the Toreros' next run. In the fourth inning, San Diego added two runs to the scoreboard on a triple, this time by Tieszen.
