HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated Fairfield University, 2-0, in a non-conference game at the QU Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 16-9 overall, while the Stags drop to 15-19.
Bobcats' starting pitcher sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) improved to 5-2 on the season after holding Fairfield scoreless over 4 1/3 innings while scattering two hits. Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) came in relief and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings for her second save of the year. Alfiere kept the Stags off balance while Schwartzburg struck-out six of the nine batters she faced in relief. Juniors Jacquie Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) both drove in runs in the Bobcats' victory.
Quinnipiac scored each of its runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. With one out on the inning, freshman Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) doubled to left field. Figmic followed with another double to left field, driving in Barba from second base. After senior catcher Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) reached first on a Fairfield error, Figmic advanced to third base on a passed ball. Figmic then scored when Ristow singled to center field. Heiberger also attempted to score on the single, but was caught out at home plate.
After four scoreless innings, the Stags attempted to come back in the top of the seventh. However, Schwartzburg struck out three consecutive Fairfield batters for the save.
The Bobcats, 4-2 in the Northeast Conference, return to action when they travel to play two league doubleheaders this weekend. Quinnipiac will face LIU Brooklyn on Friday, April 6, followed by Central Connecticut State on Saturday, April 7. Both twinbills are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
