CLEARWATER, Fla. – Freshman outfielder Courtney Solt (Boyertown, Pa.) continued her torrid streak at the dish but it wasn't enough to push the Quinnipiac softball team past Kent St. as they lost, 4-1, from the Eddie C. Moore Complex at the USF Under Armour Invitational on Sunday morning. The Bobcats finish up their five-game weekend series down in Fla. with a 2-7 overall record while the Flash improve to 5-8 on the season.
Solt blasted the cover off the ball all weekend as she recorded a five-game hitting streak down at USF and finished up with a 3-for-4 performance this morning against Kent St. with the only run scored for the Bobcats. The freshman came into Sunday batting .412 (7-for-17) over the previous four games and now is riding a .476 batting average (10-for-21) during her five-game streak. Senior shortstop Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) also notched her second multi-hit game of the season as she finished the morning 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Freshman Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pa.) pitched in and out of trouble all morning and finished with her first career complete game in her second career start. She struggled to command the strike zone as she allowed eight walks but limited the Flash to just three earned runs on only five hits.
Quinnipiac burst out the gates with as Solt led off with an infield single in the first and advanced to second on a groundout. With a runner in scoring position, Alba did what she does best and slapped a single up the middle to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
Robey did well to hold off the Flash throughout the first four innings as she helped leave six runners on-base throughout the four opening frames including four that were in scoring position.
The Bobcats had a prime opportunity to put some distance between them and Kent St. with the score still favoring Quinnipiac 1-0. Alba hit a leadoff single to center and was sacrificed over to second by sophomore Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.). Sophomore Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) then singled and senior Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) walked to load the bases with only one out. The threat however passed without the Bobcats inflicting any damage as a fielder's choice out at home and pop out finished off the inning.
With momentum now favoring Kent St., they took advantage in the top of the fifth, pushing all four of their runs across in the frame. A run-scoring single up the middle scored the first run and then with the bases loaded, Lauren Balodis notched a game-deciding two run single to center to give the Flames the lead. Another run scored on a fielding error as the Flames took a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the final three innings for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac didn't just lay down as they again threatened in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) started the inning with a single and then followed with a base knock from Solt. Sophomore Brittany Cyr (Southington, Conn.) sacrificed them over a base to put two runners in scoring position with one out but no runs came of the opportunity as Emma Johnson struck out two consecutive Bobcats to finish off the inning.
Johnson finished off the game retiring six straight Bobcats to give her team the victory.
Quinnipiac will now return home for a week before heading back down to Fla. for the USF Under Armour Showcase from five games from March 8-10 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
