HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac softball's senior shortstop Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) and freshman outfielder Courtney Solt (Boyertown, Pa.) were announced as the Northeast Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. This announcement by the league office marks the first time the Bobcats have seized both weekly awards since March 3, 2008 and just the second time in program history.
Alba's Player of the Week award is the second of her career and first since May 10, 2010. Quinnipiac's shortstop put together a stellar week down in Florida as she tallied a .481 batting average (13-for-27), .517 on-base percentage (15-for-29) and .704 slugging percentage through eight games this past week. Of her 13 hits over spring break schedule, six of them were doubles as she now leads the team with seven on the season. The weekly total also bumps her up to 39 for her career, the fourth-most in program history. Alba also chipped in eight RBI, eight runs scored and two walks over the eight game slate. The senior was also impressive defensively as she committed just one error throughout the eight games, all starts from the shortstop position. Her highlight game over the week was a 3-for-4 performance against Maine where she knocked two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored for the Bobcats. She is currently riding a six-game hitting streak wherein she has driven in seven RBI and has four multi-hit games over the recent hitting spree.
Solt wins her second Rookie of the Week this season and joins Heather Schwartzburg (2008), Krista Seeman (2007) and Kristin Sheriff (2005) as the only Bobcats to win multiple Rookie of the Week honors in program history. The freshman continues her torrid pace atop the Quinnipiac lineup as she led the team in hitting over the eight-game week with a spectacular .500 batting average (15-for-30). She also scored 10 runs through the eight games to go along with two doubles and three RBI. Her season-high seven game hitting streak came to an end on Saturday against Dartmouth but she batted over .600 during the span. Solt also posted a streak of four straight multi-hit games and five total through eight games. Her spotlight game of the week occurred on March 13 in a 11-8 win over UT-Chattanooga when she finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.
Quinnipiac's fearsome lineup will hit the field on Wednesday as the Bobcats take on UConn at 1:00 p.m. from QU Softball Field and will follow with a showdown against another instate foe Fairfield on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. from QU Softball Field as well.
