QU Softball 2014 Schedule
QU Softball 2014 Roster
HAMDEN, Conn. - In her first season as the newly hired interim head coach for the Quinnipiac softball program, Jill Karwoski has announced the 2014 schedule for her squad. Among the 56 scheduled games over the course of four months (Feb.-May) includes three trips down to Florida, appearances in five tournaments, six games against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams and 20 games as a newly accepted member of the MAAC.
The 56-game slate will include 16 that are scheduled to be played from their home facility, the QU Softball Field, while 17 will be held on the road and the remaining 23 will be played from a neutral site. Quinnipiac will appear in three tournaments starting with the University of North Florida Tournament held Feb. 14-16, followed by a series of games played in the USF Under Armour Series starting Feb. 28 and ending March 16, and finally concluding with the Towson/Monmouth Invitational held in Baltimore, Md. from March 21-23. The Bobcats also enter their first season in the MAAC which will draw the likes of Manhattan, Monmouth, Fairfield, Saint Peter's, Rider, Siena, Iona, Marist, Niagara and Canisius.
Among their 2014 opponent list include four opponents each from the American East Conference and four more from their former annual foes in the Northeast Conference. The Bobcats will also take on two teams each from the BIG EAST, American Athletic, Horizon, Colonial, Sun Belt, Mid-Eastern and Missouri Valley, and one each from the Atlantic Sun, Summit, Big South, Mid-American, Ivy League and BIG 10.
Quinnipiac embarks on their first of three trips down to Florida with their season-opening weekend at the University of North Fla. Tournament played in Jacksonville. They will take on a difficult five-game slate from Feb. 14-16 that includes two games against Savannah State and one against the likes of Southern Ill., Troy and North Fla., all of which spent time in the NCAA Softball Top 100 RPI rankings a year ago. The host North Fla. comes into 2014 as the second-highest ranked squad to end 2013 that Quinnipiac will play all season as they finished #52 with a 42-15 record last season.
After an off week the Bobcats will take another flight down to Fla. where they will begin play in the University of South Florida Under Armour Series. The Series is a group of three different tournaments all hosted by USF in their immaculate softball complex located in Clearwater, Fla. Quinnipiac will be playing in all three tournaments starting with the USF Under Armour Invitational from Feb. 28-March 2. This set of five games against Oakland, Campbell, Georgia St., Western Mich. and Fla. Atlantic may prove difficult as Georgia St. is the highest ranked opponent (#51) the Bobcats will play all season. Hailing out of the Colonial Conference, the Owls finished last season 36-19 with a 13-8 mark in the always prolific Colonial.
Their third and final flight down to Fla. follows as Quinnipiac will play in the USF Under Armour Showcase from March 7-9 with games against Indiana St., Cleveland St., Maine and two BIG EAST foes in Seton Hall and St. John's. All five of these opponents finished with losing records in 2013 as Seton Hall finished with the highest ranking at #162.
The week of spring break, the Bobcats will take on Boston Univ. and Penn on Tuesday, March 11. The Quakers are the first of four opponents for the Bobcats in 2014 to have made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Penn finished with a 30-20 record overall (16-4 Ivy League) and showed well in the NCAA Regionals as they fell to Texas A&M (12-0) and challenged a perennial power in Arizona, eventually falling in eight innings, 3-2.
Concluding their time in Fla. will be the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament which includes five games against Wagner, Florida A&M, Purdue, Green Bay and Rutgers from March 14-16. Highlighting this group is a BIG 10 opponent in the Boilermakers who finished 2013 ranked #101 in the NCAA Softball RPI Index.
The road swing continues a week later as Quinnipiac will head down to Md. for two games each against Towson and Wagner in the Towson/Monmouth Invitational from March 21-23. Upon the conclusion of their fifth and final tournament marks the 2014 home opener for Quinnipiac with a March 27 meeting against UConn. The Bobcats will have already played 26 of their 56 games before playing in their first game from the QU Softball Field.
That coming weekend marks the beginning of 10 straight conference games with doubleheaders slated against Manhattan on March 29 and Monmouth on March 30, followed by two games against Fairfield (April 2), Saint Peter's (April 5) and Rider (April 6). A weekday game at Sacred Heart is sandwiched between more MAAC contests against Siena (April 12) and Iona (April 13).
A 10-day break from conference competition follows as the Bobcats will take on their second 2013 NCAA Tournament team in Stony Brook for a doubleheader on April 16. The Seawolves won the America East Tournament with a stunning win over No. 1 seed Albany to advance to the NCAA Regionals where they showed well in losses to Missouri (3-0) and Oregon St. (6-0).
Two games against Fairleigh Dickinson (April 18) and one more against Sacred Heart (April 24) come next before taking on the reigning MAAC Tournament Champion Marist on April 30. The No. 3 seed Red Foxes ran through the 2013 MAAC Tournament winning three straight including a pair of victories over the regular season champ Fairfield to advance.
Another weekday doubleheader follows as the Bobcats take on Hartford (April 30) followed by a game against Central Conn. St. on May 1, the fourth and final 2013 NCAA Tournament Team Quinnipiac will play in 2014. The Blue Devils may have the most successful resume of any team the Bobcats will play this year as they finished 36-15 (16-4 NEC) on their way to NEC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. They then nearly took out LSU in the NCAA Regionals as they fell by just one run, 3-2, but followed with a convincing 9-1 win over Northwestern St. Central Conn. ultimately fell to LSU, failing to advance, but are the only team the Bobcats will play that won a game in the NCAA Tournament last season.
The 2014 regular season concludes at home with games against Niagara (May 3) and Canisius (May 4) with Senior Day slated for Sunday, May 4 against the Golden Griffins.
The top four teams in the MAAC standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the MAAC Tournament held May 8-11 at the Alumni Softball Field on the campus of Fairfield University. The teams play a double-elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
