CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team lost to Oakland, 7-1, and Campbell, 10-6, in their 2014 season opener at the USF Under Armour Invitational. The losses drop the Bobcats to 0-2 on the year while the Golden Grizzles improve to 7-7 and the Fighting Camels move to 10-8 with their respective victories.
Sophomore Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pa.) finished with an incredible day at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with three doubles in the nightcap against Campbell. After recording just six at-bats throughout her entire freshman season, Robey stepped up with three doubles which tied a single-game program record at Quinnipiac. Robey also plated one run and walked to round-out her breakout performance.
Junior Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) also stepped up with one of the Bobcats' four hits to go along with two walks in their first game of the afternoon against Oakland and then followed up with three RBI against Campbell in the nightcap. Sophomore Courtney Solt (Boyertown, Pa.) picked up an RBI in both consecutive games to start the season while she also singled and scored a run against Campbell.
Freshman Keilani Finley (Alameda, Calif.) picked up a single for her first career base hit against Oakland while junior Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, R.I.) picked up her first career multi-hit game with a single and double against Oakland while she followed up with a single against Campbell as she was the only Bobcat to tally a hit in both games to start the year. Lindsley was also the Bobcats' most-impressive pitcher as she entered both games in relief and went a total of 5.1 innings of scoreless ball allowing just two hits, two walks and struck out six in the combined appearances.
Oakland defeated the Bobcats, 7-1, in what was Quinnipiac's 2014 season opener while it was the Golden Grizzles' 14th game of the season. The Bobcats looked the part of an inexperienced team as three errors proved costly while Oakland benefitted from four runs in the first inning to take home the six-run victory.
Quinnipiac's lone run came in the seventh inning as Finley's first career base hit was a single up the middle with one out followed by a double from Lindsley that moved pinch runner Brittney Cyr (Southington, Conn.) over to third base. Solt then came through with an RBI groundout to second that scored Cyr led to the 7-1 result.
The nightcap against Campbell was a roller coaster affair that had the Bobcats scoring first but then the Fighting Camels took control with six runs in the third and four in the fourth to hold a commanding 10-1 lead. Quinnipiac would tally five runs of their own in the fifth to help make a game of it but it wouldn't be enough for a rally as they ultimately fell, 10-6.
Robey scored the first run of the game as she doubled to lead off the second, moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) and scored on a Campbell error on a groundball hit to first base.
After Campbell's 10-run outburst in two innings, the Bobcats picked up five runs in the fifth starting with an RBI single from Solt that scored Cyr from third. With the bases loaded and one out, Barba cleared the bases as a ball hit to second was mishandled and led to all three runs scoring on the play. Robey then doubled while Paolucci followed up with an RBI groundout to score freshman Taylor Schussler's (Westminster, Md.) first career run as she pinch ran for Robey at third base.
The Bobcats threatened in the sixth and seventh as they left a combined three runners on-base but couldn't come away with any runs as they dropped their second game to start the season.
Quinnipiac returns to action with games against Georgia State (11:45 am) and Western Michigan (4:30 pm) tomorrow from the USF Under Armour Invitational.
