Softball Falls to Seton Hall, 6-0; Sydney Robey Strikes Out Career High Five Batters Despite the Loss

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team lost to the Seton Hall Pirates, 6-0, in a non-conference game from Eddie C. Moore Field at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Saturday. The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-9 while Seton Hall improves to 4-14 on the season.

Sophomore Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pa.) made the start for the Bobcats and went six strong innings, allowing a season-low three earned runs despite picking up the loss. Robey worked her way out of trouble all afternoon as she allowed nine hits and two walks but also picked up a career-high five strikeouts on their Big East opponent. She allowed six runs total but only three of which were earned as a costly seventh inning error for the Bobcats helped lead to three runs for the Pirates that helped put the game out of reach. Senior Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) entered in the seventh for Robey and tossed a shutout inning of relief with just one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Seton Hall's Danielle DeStaso dominated the Bobcat hitters all day as she struck out 15 batters in her complete game shutout effort. Only six batters reached base safely starting with sophomore Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Mass.) who walked twice in her three plate appearances. Junior Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) lined a two-out single in the 2nd, junior Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) picked up a two-out single in the 6th and sophomore Paige Giunta (Downington, Pa.) picked up her first career hit with Quinnipiac as she lined a single in the 7th inning for the Bobcats. Giunta batted .311 for La Salle University during her freshman season before transferring to Quinnipiac last summer.

The Pirates were held relatively in check throughout by Robey except for a couple of falters in the 2nd as Seton Hall picked up a pair of RBI singles but the sophomore finished the inning with a two-out bases loaded groundout to withstand any further damage. Entering the 7th with just a 2-0 lead over Quinnipiac, the Pirates put the game well out of reach with four runs in the top half to eventually walk away 6-0 winners.

The Bobcats have one game remaining in their stint in the USF Under Armour Showcase as they play St. John's (N.Y.) on Sunday at 11:00 am.
