EDISON, N.J. – The Quinnipiac softball team's senior pitcher Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) made some history on Tuesday, becoming the first player to win a weekly MAAC award as she took home the Pitcher of the Week honors for her performance last weekend for the Bobcats. Alfiere wins her second career Pitcher of the Week award as her first career award, also the last Pitcher of the Week Quinnipiac has won, came on May 7, 2012 when the program was still a member of the Northeast Conference.
Alfiere, the lone Quinnipiac senior, appeared in four of the Bobcats' five games this past weekend and finished with 8.2 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Alfiere finished with a 1.82 ERA and also picked up a clutch two-out save on Sunday in Quinnipiac's first win of the season against St. John's (NY), 5-3.
She started her week with a scoreless inning of relief with one walk and one strikeout against Indiana State. She then allowed just two runs over six innings in a start that resulted in a hard luck no-decision against Maine. Alfiere didn't walk a batter and struck out one against the Black Bears. Later that day she threw a scoreless inning against Seton Hall and wrapped up the weekend with a two-out save against St. John's. Alfiere entered the game in the bottom of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded and her team up two runs. With all the pressure on the senior pitcher, Alfiere calmly induced a foul out and fielder's choice at home that ended the game and gave the Bobcats their first win of the 2014 season.
The Bobcats and Alfiere will be back in action this weekend as they wrap up their 12-game Florida Spring Break trip with five games at the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater from the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
