Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Contest To CCSU, 78-70
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures Saturday afternoon, but fell to Central Connecticut State, 78-70, in overtime at the TD Bank Sports Center. Sophomore Jacinda Dunbar (Edison, N.J.) recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season and junior Courtney Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) finished with a game-high 20 points as the Bobcats fall to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in Northeast Conference play with the loss. The Blue Devils' win evens their conference mark at 4-4 and improves their overall record to 7-11 this season.
"This is not a good feeling," said Head Coach Tricia Fabbri. "We played well enough to win, but we could not hold the 10-point lead. It's not often that our defense let us down, but we got it into overtime. A made three-pointer and offensive rebounds totally won it for them as they played well this afternoon."
Quinnipiac made up for its slow start in its previous game with a 32-point showing in the first half against Central Connecticut. Kaminski was the only player to reach double figures in scoring in the first, ending the half with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Kaminski also led both teams with seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action as the Bobcats took a 32-29 lead into halftime.
After 13 lead changes in the first, Quinnipiac led nearly the entire second half. The Blue Devils pulled to within two points on two separate occasions in the final frame before finally tying the game at 65-65 with 52 seconds remaining.
The Bobcats led by as many as 18 points in the second half before Central began to cut into the deficit in the final minutes. After the Blue Devils had tied the game inside the last minute, they had an opportunity on their next possession to take the lead in the final 10 seconds of the second half. Quinnipiac's defense limited Central's ability to cut inside and forced a shot-clock violation with three seconds on the clock.
Freshman guard Lisa Lebak (Robbinsville, N.J.) had an three-point shot at the buzzer hit off the backboard as time expired, sending the game to overtime for the first time this season for Bobcats.
Central Connecticut took its first lead since 1:23 of the first half on an Alexzandria Dowdy three-point field goal 36 seconds into the overtime. The Blue Devils never relinquished the lead again, holding on for the 78-70 overtime win.
Dunbar finished with 14 points and matched her career high in rebounding with 13 in the loss. Kaminski's 20 points led all scorers, while the Quinnipiac center fell one rebound short of her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with nine. Lebak matched her career high in assists, dishing out a team-high seven. Junior guard Alyssa Jann (Westford, Mass.) was the fourth member of the team to finish in double figures, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
Both teams pulled down 45 rebounds in the game, with Central outrebounding the Bobcats at the offensive end, 19-12, and Quinnipiac pulling down 33 boards at the defensive end to Central's 26. Dowdy had a game-high eight assists, while the Bobcats outshot the Blue Devils, 40.7 percent (24-59) to 37.5 percent (27-72) in the game.
The Bobcats will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 28 as they take on Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y. Quinnipiac previously defeated the Seahawks on Jan. 9 in Hamden by 10 points, 66-56. Thursday's game is set for a 5 p.m., tip-off from Spiro Sports Center.
