Women's Basketball Defeats Vermont, 76-67, In First Win Of The Season
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's basketball
team beat the University of Vermont, 76-67, at the TD Bank Sports
Center for the Bobcats first win of the season. With the victory,
Quinnipiac improves to 1-5 on the season, while Vermont falls to
Three Quinnipiac players scored in double-figures, including Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) who led the Bobcats with a team-high 17 points. The guard also collected two rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Junior Kari Goodchild (Van Horne, Iowa) added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while freshman Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Vermont's Tonya Young scored a game-high 29 points.
For the first time this season, the Bobcats outshot their opponent, shooting 40 percent from the floor, while the Catamounts shot 36.9 percent. Also, Quinnipiac outrebounded Vermont, 46-38. Quinnipiac closed the first half with a 14-2 run, turning a seven-point deficit into a five-point lead at the half, 38-33. Goodchild hit a three-point field goal to tie the game, 31-31, with 2:28 on the clock. Senior Alyssa Jann (Westford, Mass.) scored a three-pointer to end the half with Quinnipiac ahead by five, 38-33.
opened the second half with a 17-2 run over the first six minutes
in the latter stanza to push their lead to 20 points, 55-35, with
just under 14 minutes to play in the game. Quinnipiac led by as
many 23 points in the second half.
Quinnipiac's 17-2 run was capped off by a three-pointer by freshman Ellen Cannon (West Chester, Pa.) that pushed the Bobcats lead to 20 with 13:58 to play in the game. Vermont countered later in the half as the Catamounts came back within seven points twice in the last 40 seconds of the game. The Bobcats never let Vermont within nine points as Barron hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of the game.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it hosts Northeast Conference opponent Wagner on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. at Noon.
