HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) recorded her ninth career double-double on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team knocked off Fairfield University, 64-55, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats' defense held the Stags to 32.8 percent shooting for the game en route to their first win of the 2011-12 campaign.

McQuain led all scorers with a career-high 19 points on the afternoon, going 7-of-10 (.700) from the floor. She accounted for 12 rebounds to complete her second double-double of the season. Joining McQuain with double-figures on offensive end were junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) and freshman Jasmine Martin. Barron poured in 11 points and dished out six assists, while Martin added 10 points.

Quinnipiac opened the first half with a 7-0 run ignited by a McQuain jumper. The Bobcats maintained their lead over the next 10 minutes of play, as both teams traded baskets and struggled to gain a significant advantage. With eight minutes on the clock, Fairfield tied the game at 17 apiece, after a three-pointer from Brittany MacFarlane.

Three minutes later, the Bobcats took a two-point lead, 19-17, as Barron knocked down a jumper. A minute later, the Stags tied up the game, 19-19, on a layup from Christelle Akon-Akech.

Fairfield junior guard Katelyn Linney gave the Stags their first lead of the game, 22-19, as she nailed a three-pointer with three minutes remaining. Laura Vetra added two points to widen the gap, but McQuain and the Bobcats had an answer.

QU rallied off an 8-0 run through the waning minutes, granting the home team a 27-24 lead at halftime. The first half was led by Barron's 11 points, while senior Kari Goodchild (Van Horne, Iowa) pulled down eight rebounds.

Quinnipiac increased its advantage, 41-26, on a 14-2 run through the first eight minutes of the second stanza. After two minutes of scoreless play, Fairfield added two points with 11:32 on the clock. The Bobcats then went on a 4-0 run to increase their lead by 17 points, 45-28, their largest of the game with 9:30 remaining.

The 17-point margin proved to be too much for Fairfield to overcome, as the Bobcats coasted to a fairly comfortable win. The Stags chipped away down the stretch, but never came within eight points.

The Bobcats utilized a well-balanced attack that featured 10 players in the scoring column. Sophomore Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) tallied six points, freshmen Shaina Earle (South Orange, N.J.) and Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) each finished with five and four others chimed in with two.

The QU defense was tremendous, as the Bobcats held the Stags to 32.8 percent shooting. Quinnipiac also controlled the glass, 46-43, and turned 16 Fairfield turnovers into 15 points on the other end.

The Bobcats return to action with the St. Mary's Concord Hilton Thanksgiving Classic. The tournament consists of four teams including St. Mary's, Virginia Tech and Minnesota. QU opens with Minnesota on Friday night at 8 p.m., and will then take on the winner/loser of Virginia Tech and St. Mary's, depending on the outcome of its game.
