PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Samantha Guastella (Red Bank N.J.) scored a game-high 13 points and 2 blocks on Saturday afternoon as the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Brown Bear Classic with a 60-53 win over the University of New Hampshire at Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 5-0 overall and will look for their second, in-season tournament victory in as many seasons tomorrow afternoon. Quinnipiac will take on Rider University, who advanced with a 57-47 win over the hosting Bears in the early game.

The five straight wins to start a season is a first for the Bobcats since joining the NCAA's highest division. The last time Quinnipiac started the season with five straight wins was back in the 1986-87 campaign under head coach Barry Wolfston when he led, the then Braves, to nine straight wins out of the gate.

Guastella finished with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots. Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) finished with 10 points, three assists and 2 steals, while junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) chimed in with six points and four rebounds. Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) and Shaina Earle (South Orange, N.J.) each gave quality minutes off the bench.  Warner finished with seven points and five boards, while Earle had three points, three rebounds and an assist.

After a back-and-forth start to the game, Guastella sparked a 23-7 run over a 12-minute span which granted the Bobcats a commanding 16-point lead with two minutes left in the first half.  Guastella led the way with nine points going 4-for-6 from the floor in the opening stanza as Quinnipiac carried a 33-23 advantage into the locker room at halftime.  Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) added six points on 3-of-3 shooting before the halftime whistle. The forward finished the game with eight points and three rebounds.

In the second half of play, New Hampshire chipped away at its deficit and closed the gap to 52-51 with four minutes left to play. Nonetheless, Quinnipiac regained its composure and answered with an 8-0 run to seal its fifth win of the season. With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 5-1 all-time against the New Hampshire.

The Bobcats out-rebounded the Wildcats, 39-35, and forced 22 Wildcat turnovers. QU also garnered a 10-1 advantage in points from the free-throw line.

Cari Reed led the offense for New Hampshire with 13 points, two assists and 2 steals.

The Bobcats will face Rider in their final match of the Brown Bear Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I.   This matchup will mark the first time the two programs meet.
