PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and sophomore Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.), the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team defeated Rider University, 72-57, in the championship game of the Brown Bear Classic at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I. on Sunday afternoon. McQuain and Martin each finished with 20 points in the game, guiding the Bobcats to their second in-season tournament victory in as many seasons. Junior Brittany McQuain was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the tournament, while Martin was named to the all-tournament team.

Just a year after winning the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, the Bobcats garnered their second straight in-season tournament title, and improved to 6-0 in the process. With the loss, the Broncs fell below .500 on the season to 3-4.

McQuain and Martin paced the Bobcats offense in two of their most impressive outings of the season. McQuain poured in 20 points going 8-of-15 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Martin was just as good, compiling a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) added 10 points, four assists and four steals, while Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) chimed in with six points and five rebounds.

The Bobcats carried a six-point lead into halftime, but a quick second-half spurt put Rider right back into the game. The two teams went back-and-forth until the 11-minute mark; when McQuain, Martin and the Bobcats pulled away with an 8-0 run. Quinnipiac extended the margin to double-digits, a lead it would never relinquish en route to the Brown Bear Classic title.

Quinnipiac leads the Northeast Conference in scoring offense (77.8 points per game), which is due in large part to its stifling defense. The Bobcats turned 24 Rider turnovers into 26 points on the other end, snatched a 39-38 edge in rebounding and held the Broncs to 33 percent shooting from the floor.

In addition, Quinnipiac conducted an efficient offense evidenced by easy buckets underneath. The Bobcats controlled the paint, 34-28, and mustered seven second chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds.

Sironda Chambers and MyNeshia McKenzie led the offense for the Broncs. Chambers finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while McKenzie notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bobcats will return to the hardwood Saturday, Dec. 8 as they take on Holy Cross.  This will be the second home game this season for the Bobcats at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.  Tipoff is set for 12 p.m.
