HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's basketball team moved up three spots to No. 17 in the College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Tuesday, December 4, 2012. Fresh off their second, in-season tournament win in as many seasons, the Bobcats are 6-0 for the first time in program history since turning NCAA Division I and first time since their 1985-86 campaign.
Quinnipiac, the last remaining undefeated team in the census, improved its run to six straight this past weekend with wins over New Hampshire and Rider at the Brown Bear Classic in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Samantha Guastella (Red Bank N.J.) scored a game-high of 13 points and grabbed three rebounds against the Wildcats, while junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and sophomore Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) lifted the Bobcats over the Broncs with 20-point performances en route to All-Tournament Team honors. McQuain poured in 20 points going 8-of-15 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Martin was just as good, compiling a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals.
In its third year of existence, the College Insider Mid-Major Committee selected Gonzaga as the top team in this week's poll – a second straight for the Bulldogs. Green Bay received three first place votes and garnered second, while Middle Tennessee, Delaware and Chattanooga rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 10), who the Bobcats will take on next week, James Madison (No. 20), who the Bobcats beat in their season-opener, and Sacred Heart (No. 24), a fellow member of the Northeast Conference.
The Bobcats return to the hardwood Saturday, Dec. 8 where they will take on Holy Cross at the TD Bank Sports Center. Tip-off is set for 1:07 p.m. with all the action broadcasted live on the New England Sports Network (NESN).
