NCAA Division I College Insider Mid-Major Poll
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team was ranked 17th in the latest College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 by coaches on the committee. This marks the highest ranking in Quinnipiac history since the Bobcats became eligible for the poll back in 1998 when they joined NCAA Division I.
The top five spots in the College Insider Mid-Major poll contained the same teams with the Bulldogs of Gonzaga taking 30 first place votes and the No. 1 slot. Delaware received one first place vote and garnered second, while Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee Green Bay rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 11), who defeated QU this past weekend, and James Madison (No. 22), who the Bobcats beat in their season-opener.
Most recently, the Bobcats fell to 7-1 on the season – ending their longest unbeaten streak to start a season since joining the NCAA's highest division. Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) scored a team-high 16 points and snatched a season-high eight steals and Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) finished with 15 points, but Quinnipiac couldn't convert key possessions down the stretch en route to its first loss of the season.
Junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) turned in a solid all-around performance, just falling short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while also totaling four steals. Quinnipiac was out-shot in the first half, but five three-pointers, including a pair by Ellen Cannon (Westchester, Pa.) off the bench, kept the game close after first half, 34-30, in favor of the Hawks. Cannon went three of three from behind the arc in the contest.
Quinnipiac used a 6-0 run to start the second half to tie the game, before Hartford eventually pulled away. 11 of Barron's 16 points - as well as five of her eight steals - came down the stretch. Hartford's Nikkia Smith came off the bench to counter Barron's second-half performance, dropping 12 points in the second frame, powered by 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Smith also collected four rebounds and had three steals in the second half alone.
The Bobcats will return to the court Saturday, Dec. 22 as they take on Big East opponent St. John's at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. This will be the first meeting between these two programs. The Red Storm is currently 5-4 to start the season.
