NCAA Division I College Insider Mid-Major Poll

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team was recently ranked 19th in the latest College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 by coaches on the committee. Quinnipiac is off to an 8-1 record through nine games and its best start since the 2008-09 campaign – a season that also included a win over a BIG EAST opponent (Providence).

The top five spots in the College Insider Mid-Major poll contained the same teams with the Bulldogs of Gonzaga taking 26 first place votes and the No. 1 slot. Chattanooga claimed second with three first place votes, Delaware garnered third with two first place votes, while Green Bay and Toledo rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 9), who defeated the Bobcats on Dec. 16th, and James Madison (No. 21), who the Bobcats beat in their season-opener.

In their most recent outing, the Bobcats defeated St. John's, 75-72, at the TD Bank Sports Center last week (Dec. 22). Quinnipiac featured five players in double figures, led by Felicia Barron's 19 points and Samantha Guastella's 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. Guastella's double-double was her second of the season. Nikoline Ostergaard (Vaebeck, Denmark) had 13 points, coming off the bench, while Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) added 12 points, with eight coming in the second half. Brittany McQuain(Independence, Mo.) added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.  The last time for the Bobcats to post five players in double figures was Jan. 30, 2012 when QU defeated Mount St. Mary's, 83-79.

After a brief holiday break, the Bobcats wrap up non-conference play with their second in-season invitational at the Florida International University Tournament. QU will join the Panthers, Northeastern and Georgia Tech in Greater Miami, Fla. on Saturday (Dec. 29) and Sunday (Dec. 30). FIU was alongside the Bobcats in the 2012 WNIT, while Georgia Tech was a Sweet 16 Contender in last year's NCAA Tournament, before being ousted by #1 seed Baylor University – the eventual 2012 NCAA Champion.
