MIAMI, Fla. – Led by Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.), the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team defeated Northeastern University, 83- 72, in the consolation game of the Fun and Sun Classic at the U.S. Century Bank Arena in Miami, Fla. Barron finished with 18 points and three steals, while Guastella posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as well as five assists. Along with her third double- double of the season, Guastella was named to the all-tournament team.
After falling to Georgia Tech on Saturday, the Bobcats came out determined, forcing back to back turnovers that led to a pair of three-pointers by Guastella that gave the Bobcats an 8-2 run out of the gates. With eight minutes left in the first half, Barron sparked an 8-0 run with back to back three pointers to give Quinnipiac a commanding 33-20 lead. Barron went on to finish the game with 18 points and four take-aways.
Freshman Maria Napolitiano (Cincinnati, Ohio) provided quality minutes off the bench in the first half. The sharp shooter knocked down 3 of 7 from long range for 9 first-half points. The Bobcats were on fire, shooting 48 percent from downtown. Heading into the half, the Bobcats lead the Huskies, 39-22, including 15 points coming from reserves.
Coming out of the break, the Huskies bit back going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 30-44. Sophomore Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) was big down the stretch as she also collected 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Leading the Huskies under the basket was all-tournament player Jewel Tunstull who recorded 15 points and 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season while Deanna Kerkholf collecting 14 points.
The Bobcats will return to the hardwood to enter Northeast Conference play against LIU Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan 5th (12 p.m.), St. Francis N.Y. Jan. 7th (7:00 p.m.) and intra-state rivals the Pioneers of Sacred Heart Jan. 12th (12 p.m.) at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
