HAMDEN, Conn. – The post presence of Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and a second-half surge from Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) were too much for the LIU Blackbirds on Saturday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team won its conference opener, 67-60, at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats improve to 4-0 at home and 10-2 overall – their best start since the 2007-08 campaign.
McQuain put together a tremendous afternoon for the Bobcats, picking up a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Martin chipped in with 15 points, all coming in the second half, going 6-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 from long range. Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) added eight points, four assists and two steals and Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
Quinnipiac took control early on in the game with a 9-1 run over a four minute span in the first half. The Bobcats carried a six-point lead, 30-24, into the break, and then boasted an 11-0 run to a 41-24 lead with 17 minutes to go. LIU managed to cut into its deficit down the stretch, but Barron and McQuain sealed the deal with four straight free-throws in the waning seconds.
Quinnipiac's defensive pressure proved to be the difference in the conference showdown, as the hosting Bobcats held LIU to 32.4 percent from the floor. The Bobcats also forced 21 Blackbird turnovers which resulted in 11 points on the other end.
Offensively, the Bobcats mustered only 36.1 percent themselves, but obtained a big lift from seven three-pointers. Quinnipiac was also 8-of-10 from the charity stripe and earned 22 second-chance points.
Martin adds to her season compiling her seventh straight double-digit game in Bobcat uniform. At point for Quinnipiac sophomore Gillian Abshire (Washington D.C.) and senior Lisa Lebak (Robbinsville, N.J.) led the team with seven assists to just one turnover.
The Bobcats continue the beginning of their season at home against the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers on Monday, Jan. 7, at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Terriers are off to a 3-8 start on the season and currently rank 10th in Northeast Conference play.
