HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team jumped up two spots and cracked the top-10 in the latest College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 by coaches on the committee. This marks the highest ranking in Quinnipiac history since the Bobcats became eligible for the poll back in 1998 when they joined NCAA Division I.
Most recently, the Bobcats improved to 15-2 overall and 6-0 in conference competition with two NEC wins this past weekend. Off and running to their best start since the 2007-08 campaign, Quinnipiac defeated Robert Morris and Saint Francis Pa. in this past weekend's competition.
On Saturday the Bobcats defeated Robert Morris, 61-52, on the road in Pennsylvania. Leading the way for the Bobcats was senior guard Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.), who compiled 14 points and seven steals as she finished 6-of-10 from the field. Junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) mirrored Barron's efforts with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats. Sophomore guard Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J) added 11 points for her 11th consecuative game in double-digits for Quinnipiac. Sophomore Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) went three of five from the floor in the first half, concluding the game with seven points. Coming out of the locker room, Barron caught fire in the second half with 10 of her 14 points coming in the stanza. Sophomore point guard Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) also garnered seven assists with only one turnover. Junior Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) collected eight points and a season high of eight rebounds in the match.
On Monday against the Red Flash, Quinnipiac added another win with an 81-69 victory over the second place team in the NEC. Barron once again excelled collecting a career high of 28 points, going 10-of-19 from the floor along with 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Martin also added 21 points to match her career-high and her 12th consecutive double-digit performance, as the duo combined for 49 points – more than half of the team's total. Warner and McQuain paced the front court, combining for 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Abshire composed a steady offense with seven points and game-high eight assists.
The top five spots in the College Insider Mid-Major poll contained the same teams with Delaware taking seven first place votes and the No. 1 slot. Green Bay claimed second, the Bulldogs of Gonzaga garnered third, while Toledo and Chattanooga rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 23), who defeated the Bobcats on Dec. 16th, and James Madison (Honorable Mention), who the Bobcats defeated in their season-opener.
The Bobcats host the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Saturday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. with all the action live on Fox College Sports (FCS) and ESPN3. FDU is 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the NEC.
