HAMDEN, Conn. – Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) led all scorers with 18 points and Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) added 17, as the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team held off Saint Francis University, 61-50, Saturday at the TD Bank Sports Center. Prior to tip-off, the Bobcats honored five senior class members for their commitment to the women's basketball program. In addition, Quinnipiac clinched a playoff berth for the Northeast Conference Tournament with the win.
Barron had a stellar all-around game for Quinnipiac, adding seven rebounds, four assists and six steals to her 18-point effort. Martin finished added six rebounds to her double-digit performance, as the two combined for 24 points in the second half. Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) collected her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds, Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) had five points, four assists and seven rebounds and Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) hauled in eight rebounds to go along with four points.
Shooting woes plagued Quinnipiac in the first half, which allowed Saint Francis to jump out in front. The two teams played within two possessions for most of the half, until the Red Flash opened a double-digit lead. Ahead by two with 8:24 remaining, SFU boasted an 8-0 run over the next four minutes – granting the away team a 25-15 advantage.
Quinnipiac answered with five straight points and cut the deficit to five, 29-24, as they went to the locker room for halftime. The Bobcats connected on just 28.6 percent from the floor, went 0-for-10 from behind the arc and just 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. It marked just the fifth time the Bobcats have trailed at the break this year.
The veteran group responded nicely after the intermission and began to chip away at the deficit midway through the second half. Trailing by six with 10:58 remaining, Abshire knocked down a jumper and sparked a 15-0 run over the next four minutes – granting the Bobcats a 50-41 lead. Quinnipiac bumped the lead to double-figures and made enough free-throws down the stretch to claim another double-digit victory.
The Bobcats won the edge on the backboards which proved to be a big statistic in the outcome. Quinnipiac mustered a season-high 58 rebounds compared to 45 from Saint Francis. Quinnipiac also held the Red Flash to just 29.4 percent shooting – marking the second time the Bobcats have held an opponent under 30 percent this season.
Quinnipiac improved to 10-17 all-time against the Red Flash, and completed a season-sweep for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The Bobcats won on the road, 85-69, back in January.
Alli Williams led the Red Flash with her 13th consecutive double-double. She had 16 points, 16 rebounds and five steals. Two others finished with seven points.
