BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team worked its way in the Northeast Conference record-book again on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats cruised past LIU Brooklyn, 66-45, at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletics Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 26-2 overall and matched the Northeast Conference record for most overall wins in a single season.
Quinnipiac, now 17-0 in NEC play, used a balanced attack which featured 10 players in the scoring column. Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) led all Bobcats with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots in the win. Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) joined McQuain in double-figures with 10 points, while Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) added eight points and three rebounds. Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) and Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) each finished with seven points apiece.
Behind 12 points from Cleandra Roberts and nine points from Sophie Bhasin, LIU Brooklyn kept the game close through the first half. Quinnipiac connected on just 37 percent of its shot attempts, compared to 48 percent from the hosting Blackbirds. QU managed a mere two point lead, 31-29, at the break.
That all changed in the second half, as Quinnipiac quickly pulled away with a 16-0 run over a seven minute span. Defensively, the Bobcats held the Blackbirds 0-for-4 from the field and forced four turnovers during the run. Quinnipiac's double-digit lead was never in jeopardy from that point forward; as the Bobcats went on to claim their 11th road win of the season.
Quinnipiac's defense proved to be the difference in the game with the Bobcats forcing 28 LIU turnovers. Quinnipiac turned those turnovers into 23 points on the other end and held the Blackbirds to just 26.9 percent shooting in the second half.
With the win, Quinnipiac matched Sacred Heart's win total of 26 in the 2005-06 campaign. Quinnipiac can set a new mark with a win on Monday, which will also make the Bobcats the fourth team in NEC history to complete a perfect 18-0 season.
Quinnipiac improved to 15-13 in the all-time series – including a 7-6 record when playing in Brooklyn. Leading the Blackbirds in scoring was junior Cleandra Roberts with 18 points and eight rebounds. The forward went 9-for-13 from the field for LIU. Also in double digits, coming off the bench for LIU was freshman Sophie Bhasin chipping in 14 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
The Bobcats return to the hardwood on Monday night with their regular season finale. Quinnipiac heads over to St. Francis Brooklyn for a 7 p.m. tilt at the Pope Physical Education Center.
