Women’s Basketball Breaks NEC Record In 73-54 Win Over St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team became just the fourth team to complete a perfect Northeast Conference regular season on Monday night, as the Bobcats improved to 18-0 with a 73-54 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn at the Pope Physical Education Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 27-2 overall which also gives them the NEC record for most wins in a single season.

The previous record for most wins in a season was set in 2006, when Sacred Heart posted a 26-win campaign. The Bobcats already set the most wins in QU Division I history when they reached 26 wins on Saturday – and now remain just one win shy of matching the school record of 28 – which was set in the 1983-84 season.

Quinnipiac, now winners in 19 straight games (tied for fourth longest in the nation), featured four players in double-figures in the win. Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) led the way with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting; Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) each had 12 points; and Ellen Cannon (West Chester, Pa.) chipped in with 10. Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) turned in a solid all-around effort with nine points, seven assists and four rebounds, while Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) and Mario Napolitano (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with five points apiece.

The Bobcats wasted very little time in this one, as the visitors jumped out to a double-digit lead before the midway point of the first half. With 8:37 left in the half, Guastella gave Quinnipiac a 15-point advantage with a layup; a lead that remained above 10 for the remainder of the stanza.

Offensively and defensively, Quinnipiac was too tough for the Terriers to keep pace. The Bobcats shot 49 percent from the floor, while holding St. Francis Brooklyn to just 36 percent. Quinnipiac's lead ballooned to as many as 20 points late in the second half, leaving the Bobcats with their 12th win on the road this season.

The Bobcats controlled the glass, 35-32, and once again turned defense into offense. The Q forced 20 Terrier turnovers which generated points on the other end. Quinnipiac was also very discipline on the defensive end, committing just nine fouls in the contest.

St. Francis Brooklyn was led by Sarah Benedetti who finished with a game-high 19 points. She went 6-of-11 from the floor and knocked down five from long range. Jessica Kaufman added 14 points.

Quinnipiac clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament two weeks ago and will host eighth-seeded Bryant University next week at the Bank. The single-elimination tournament will also feature Sacred Heart, Monmouth, Saint Francis University, Mount St. Mary's, CCSU and St. Francis Brooklyn.
