HAMDEN, Conn. - Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) scored a game-high 22 points in Friday night's ESPN3 clash with Marist, but in the end it was the Red Foxes who prevailed with a 69-63 victory at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in league play - in a game that marked Quinnipiac's first MAAC game in program history. Eight-time reigning MAAC champion Marist improved to 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference action.
Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, New Jersey) had 15 points and seven rebounds for Quinnipiac while Gillian Abshire (Washington, DC) had eight points, 10 assists, and four rebounds for the Bobcats. Sydney Coffey was the leading scorer for Marist with 19 points and five rebounds. She was perfect from the charity stripe as she went 11-11. Madeline Blaise had 18 points for Marist and was 6-6 from the line.
The Bobcats outshot Marist from the field in the first half while Marist held a 23-16 edge on the boards and a 6-1 edge in steals. Marist went 12-15 from the line in the first half and found success throughout the entire game from the charity stripe to build their lead. Marist headed into the locker room at the half up 33-27 after holding a lead as large as 11.
Quinnipiac came out firing in the second half converting on three of their first four possessions to cut the Marist lead to one. Marist would not panic as they went on 11-0 run over the next three minutes. Guastella and Abshire would keep Quinnipiac in the game as the Bobcats trailed 54-48 with 9:28 to go in the game.
Marist would still maintain the lead after remaining solid from the free throw line. In the second half the Red Foxes went 17-19 from the line. Quinnipiac was able to make it a one possession game after a Martin jumper with 39 seconds left, but Marist would hit three of four free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
